A New Discovery in Turkey's Flora: Boerhavia erecta L.
Botanical research conducted in the Karaağaç neighborhood of Arsuz, Hatay, has resulted in the first recording of Boerhavia erecta L. (family Nyctaginaceae) in Turkey's flora. This significant discovery was made by researchers Dr. Aysel Ulus and Fatmagül Bolat from the Faculty of Forestry at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa.
The Story of the Discovery
The plant was first observed on June 30, 2023, in the Karaağaç neighborhood of Arsuz. During their flora studies in the region, the researchers encountered this species, which had never been previously recorded in Turkey. Detailed morphological examinations and herbarium comparisons confirmed the identification as Boerhavia erecta L.
Plant Characteristics
Known as "Erect Spiderling" in English, the plant has the following morphological features:
- Height: 60-65 cm tall
- Spread: Up to 170 cm horizontal spread
- Stems: Purple-red and green colored, with an erect growth habit
- Flowers: Small white flowers with pink stripes
- Family: Nyctaginaceae (Four O'Clock family)
Distribution and Natural Habitat
Boerhavia erecta is a species widely found in tropical and subtropical regions. Its main distribution areas include Central and South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia. Bird migration is believed to have played a significant role in its arrival to Turkey. Arsuz's Eastern Mediterranean location and mild climate provide suitable conditions for this tropical species to survive.
Uses in Traditional Medicine
Boerhavia erecta is an important plant used in various traditional medicine systems worldwide:
- Ayurveda: Used in Indian traditional medicine for treating liver and kidney disorders
- Siddha: Used as an anti-inflammatory in South Indian medical tradition
- Unani: Used as a diuretic and antipyretic in Islamic medical tradition
- African Traditional Medicine: Used in treating various skin diseases
- Chinese Medicine: Used for detoxification and immune strengthening
Scientific Significance and Ecosystem Monitoring
This discovery once again reveals the remarkable biodiversity of Arsuz and its surroundings. The addition of new species to Turkey's flora through the effects of climate change and migration routes underscores the importance of ecosystem monitoring studies.
